August Offer

July 31, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

Orthodontics (Braces) have come a long way since I was at Dental School! Firstly, it is the norm now for adults of all ages to wear braces as opposed to just children. Secondly “train tracks” are largely a thing of the past and clear discreet aligners are the norm. Invisalign are the leaders in this technology and we are pleased to offer it here at Chepstow Dental Care

This discreet orthodontic technique uses a series of custom-made aligners to gradually move crooked, gappy or crowded teeth to a more desirable position. As it is virtually undetectable way to straighten teeth, it is suitable for adults who may feel self-conscious about wearing very obvious braces.

These innovative aligners can also be taken out, so you can maintain your oral hygiene as normal, eat whatever you choose and remove them for special occasions.

  • Almost invisible
  • Removable
  • Custom-made
  • Comfortable
  • Quick

Treatment steps

  • If you are a suitable candidate for this adult-friendly treatment, we take impressions and photos, and collect other information about your teeth. We then use special 3D technology to create a personalised plan, which shows how your teeth will move and also how they will look after treatment.
  • When the aligners are ready, you will wear a different one every two weeks until the carefully controlled force shifts your teeth to a better position. You may feel minor discomfort when a new aligner is fitted but this is usually just a feeling of pressure and a good indicator that the treatment is working.
  • Treatment times will vary depending on your individual issue, but most cases are completed in 6-12 months. As the aligners only work while you are actually wearing them, we recommend they are kept in place for 22–24 hours per day.

Following treatment, as with all orthodontic methods, you will need to wear a retainer to stop your teeth moving back to their former position.

Dental implants – Introduction

July 2, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. There are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. The main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. Over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant.

In order to support replacement teeth, dental implants normally have some form of internal screw thread or post space that allows a variety of components to be fitted. Once fitted, these components provide the foundation for long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.

Who is suitable for dental implants?

Dental implants are suitable for most adults with good general health. They can only be used once the jawbone has stopped growing and so generally are not used with younger patients. Habits such as heavy drinking or smoking can increase the number of problems associated with initial healing and thereafter may be bad for the long-term health of gum and bone surrounding each
implant. Some dentists will decline to place implants if smoking cannot be reduced or given up altogether.

However, each case is different and if you do have any medical problems then speak to your doctor or dentist prior to starting any treatment – it is only in some circumstances that health problems prevent the use of dental implants altogether.

How will you know if you are suitable for implants?

At our practice we are passionate about giving our patients as much information as possible about available treatment in order for them to make the right decision for themselves. Everyone’s circumstances, wants and needs are different and what is right for one person is not necessarily the right option for everyone. Our consultation process consists of an initial appointment led by our treatment co-ordinator.

This is a complimentary appointment for you to come and meet our team and get a feel for the practice and gain information about the options available to you and of course, the likely costs. The next step is a consultation with Dr Sian Jones to assess the feasibility of providing implant treatment. At this appointment you will be expected to answer detailed questions concerning your medical history and there will be a complete examination of your mouth and remaining teeth to discover the nature and extent of any current dental problems, and your mouths general health and function.

We usually take clinical photographs, models of your teeth, all necessary radiographs,. It is very important that to us that you have a long term plan for your teeth and your smile, and have an understanding of any future problems or treatment that you may need to have. The fee for this appointment is £90 inclusive of everything detailed above.

For July ONLY we are offering both consultations totally FREE OF CHARGE. Why not take advantage!! Find out more here

June Offer

June 1, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

Ok, so wondering what this month’s offer is about? Let me fill you in!!

When I reached the age of around 30, loads of my friends started asking about anti-wrinkle treatments, when they were about to go on holiday. We all cherish our time off and want to look as good as possible on the beach, wherever it may be! For me, it’s generally West Wales, but hey I get a tan there too!! Most people hit the gym for 6 weeks before their holiday, watch what they eat, and then get ready for basking in the sun. Turns out that squinting and frowning in the sun give you white lines that ruin your otherwise flawless tan!! We all do it!  A good pair of sunglasses help, but ultimately, not squinting or frowning is the best option.

With our anti-wrinkle treatments, I (and lots of my friends) can testify that you don’t get them in the first place.  It’s safe, relatively pain-free and easy to get done! So if you’re worried about those 2 white lines in between your eyes or the potential for a few zebra marks either side of your eyes whilst enjoying your summer sun, give us a call on 01291 622450, there’s 10% off- enjoy!

It’s Wedding Fever!!

May 1, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

With the spring upon us and the summer months encroaching there are lots of us preparing for weddings. As a team we have been busy treating brides and the family members of bride and grooms in preparation for their big days!! We have even been privileged enough of have received an invite to one of our lovely brides weddings and can’t wait to get all dressed up as a team and help celebrate her big day!! (Photo’s to follow!)

I also have a family wedding in the offing. My husband’s sister is tying the knot, so we are wedding fever pitch!! There’s so much to organise in advance but the bridal party looking dapper is of course paramount. My sister in law has the dress sorted, the boys are getting fitted for their suits, hair and make-up has been organised, so, it’s all in hand. I’m currently busy whitening everyone’s teeth, as they all want beautiful smiles for the photos. Looking back at my own wedding I remember having sore cheeks from all the smiling for the photos that immortalise your special day. If you are getting married and are interested in treatment for you and/or the bridal party, check out this month’s offer page.

Then of course , this month we have the BIG ONE- the Royal Wedding. Meghan is set to be a beautiful bride and there is speculation as to what she will wear, there is one thing for sure, she will be sporting her megawatt smile. It is definitely one of her most memorable features.

Why Meghan Markle’s Smile Is So Great

Meghan’s smile is gleaming white, her teeth are perfectly aligned, and their shape is just right in length and width. She knows her teeth look good, and she isn’t shy about showing them off.
Amazing smile pays dividends in photos, makes you seem more approachable and down to earth (even when you’re posing for engagement photos with a prince), and, simply enough, makes you look amazing. No doubt, Meghan’s smile helped her land acting roles, and if she bestowed that smile on Prince Harry, it undoubtedly won him over.

The Evolution of a Smile

If you do a Google search for Meghan Markle’s teeth, you will easily discover grainy high school yearbook photos that show Meghan smiling widely, but with a gap between her front teeth. A round of braces or Invisalign could have tightened up those spaces while a teeth-whitening treatment could have brightened her teeth, because in Meghan’s sorority photos from Northwestern University, she is sporting a flawless, straight, white grin.

The smile Meghan reveals now, however, is likely the product of a smile makeover consisting of porcelein veneers, but, whatever cosmetic dentistry Meghan has had done, it works. Her smile certainly rivals her soon-to-be sister-in-law Kate Middleton, known for her own genuine smile and perfect teeth.

Smile Makeovers for Wanna-Be Royals

You don’t have to be a British royal to qualify for your own smile makeover. In fact, all you need is the desire to look like a healthier, happier, and smarter version of yourself. Maybe teeth whitening is all you need to brighten your look and allow people to overlook a crooked tooth or gapped smile. A perfect smile isn’t necessary, but you may want to consider some orthodontics with the whitening and we can help you choose the best option for you within your budget. Check out our bridal offers page LINK We can’t make any promises that a smile makeover will land you in a castle, but you can feel like a celebrity with a customized smile transformation.

Adult Orthodontics

April 3, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

Everybody wants straight white teeth. Every time you switch on the TV or internet, you will see celebrities with beautiful straight white teeth. Not everyone is blessed with a natural bright white beaming smile.

Here in the UK, our teeth and smiles are often made fun of by people from other countries, as up until recently, having straight white teeth was not seen as a priority for the British population. With the advent of social media and phones that can take great pictures anywhere, the ‘millennials’ are more image conscious and a great smile is an important part of this. They are also more educated in looking after their teeth, and more and more people are keeping their own teeth for longer and want a great smile to maintain a youthful appearance – a smile makeover can knock 10 years off your appearance!!!

The trend in having a “smile makeover” became popular in this country in the early 2000’s.  American dentists led the way and came over to the UK and taught our dentists the concepts of smile design using dental veneers. This is a great treatment, but, veneers, crowns and bridges eventually need replacing. Currently, we as dentists try to be as conservative as possible. Moving the teeth and whitening them is a better option in the majority of cases.

Adult Orthodontics?

So how do we solve the problem, how do we give our patients straight white teeth? Simple, we can now provide adult orthodontics or braces for grown-ups to straighten the teeth. Most of the time, when I mention this option to patients they instantly say “No chance, I had train tracks as a child, and I’m not having them again!!!”. However, upon explaining that now braces are different, soon, our patients begin to listen and the begin to understand the benefits of braces. The whitening bit is relatively easy once the teeth are straight.

Why patients don’t want braces

Commonly, patient’s main objections to adult orthodontics are:

  • I had them when I was young and the teeth moved back
  • I don’t want train tracks
  • I don’t want braces for 2 years
  • I don’t want to have any teeth extracted for the brace to work.
  • I don’t want people to see that I have braces
  • Braces hurt

Ok, so you have to permanently retain the teeth-period!  This means some form of retainer on a permanent basis, either a removable worn at night (my personal preference!), or a wire on the back of your teeth. Most patients feel this is a small price to pay for maintaining a beautiful smile!

Newer teeth straightening systems come in tooth coloured, or completely invisible options. The treatment times are much quicker; many treatments can be completed in as little as six months! Also, these days we try to practice extraction free orthodontics – we don’t want to take any teeth out if we can avoid it.

What are the problems that adult orthodontics/braces can treat?

  • Crowded Teeth – Teeth which are twisted or overlapping
  • Spaces –  Spaces between teeth
  • Teeth that stick out
  • Fang-like Canines
  • Open Bites – Teeth do not meet when you bite, especially at the front
  • Deep Bites – You cannot see your lower teeth when you bite
  • Cross Bites – Teeth that overlap in the wrong way.

What are the options?

Now the braces are tooth coloured. These can only be seen when you are standing very close to the person. You will be shocked at how many people have this type of appliance in their mouths and you will not have known!

Clear aligners (a removable brace that looks a little like a gum shield or whitening tray) can be made to be almost invisible. This device is only removed when you eat and causes your teeth to move into a straighter position. This type of brace was made famous by the Invisalign company.

For more complex cases there are lingual braces, where the brackets are put on the palate side of your teeth.

Although a dentist, I am also a dental patient. I can totally empathise with my patients, I had aligner treatment and am really pleased with the results.

Which dentist do I go to?

We are biased and would say come and see us here at Chepstow Dental Care and we will ensure that the solution provided is the right one for you. Take advantage of our offer this month of free whitening with adult orthodontics! Call us on 01291 622450! If you cannot come and see us, then talk to your normal dentist for advice.

P.S.  Here’s one of the team on a recent night out (over 50% of us have had adult orthodontics- can you spot them!)

Invisalign open day Saturday 17th March 2018 10am-2pm

February 14, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

If you’re considering a straighter smile, but aren’t keen on the idea of “train tracks,” clunky brackets or visible wires, Invisalign’s clear removable aligners allow you to straighten your teeth the discreet way – so all people will notice is your confident smile.

An alternative to traditional braces, Invisalign uses a series of transparent plastic retainers to gently ease your teeth into position – you will change to a new aligner every 1 to 2 weeks, each time getting closer to that straight end result.

At Chepstow Dental Care we are having an open day so that you can learn more about Invisalign. We will be able to show you the system, answer any of your questions and give you a fantastic deal if you decided to go ahead with treatment.

Ten reasons to have Invisalign:

1. The clear aligners are almost invisible, making them popular with adults.

2. Invisalign is easily removable for eating, contact sports and the odd special occasion

3. Using ClinCheck software, we can show you how your teeth could look after treatment before you even start!

4. Your aligners are custom-made to suit your smile and fit securely over your teeth

5. Invisalign is able to treat a range of issues, from slight misalignment to more dramatic transformations

6. We work around you – our clinicians will provide you with batches of aligners so that you can change them on time, wherever you are

7. Treatment times are usually about 6 months. Everyone is different but unlikely more than 9 months

8. With no wires or brackets, Invisalign is smooth and comfortable to wear

9. You can care for your teeth as normal, as Invisalign can be removed to brush and floss

10. It’s tried and tested – used by over 5 million people worldwide (and counting!)

Invisalign® braces step-by-step

If you’re interested in Invisalign braces you’re probably keen to know more about what your treatment will involve. Invisalign sounds great, but will you need to undergo long and arduous appointments with us to achieve a straighter smile? The short answer is ‘no’ (phew!).

From the very beginning, treatment is comfortable and convenient. To give you an idea of what to expect, here is a step-by-step guide to the typical Invisalign patient journey:

1. Invisalign consultation

Come and see us for a consultation to find out if an Invisalign treatment is suitable for you. This appointment is very relaxed and will include a brief examination of your teeth and the opportunity to ask lots of questions. We’ll also go through the cost of your treatment and our payment options. Photos will be taken sent to the Invisalign who will quickly give us an idea if treatment is possible of not.

2. ClinCheck®

At your next appointment, we’ll take impressions (moulds) of your teeth, which we send off to Invisalign’s team in Costa Rica. On our open day we will have access to the latest technology and a scanner will be used instead of the impressions…..very clever!! They’ll then use these impressions to create a digital model of your teeth and, based on our recommendations, they’ll plan your treatment using special ClinCheck software.

3. Virtual treatment plan

Your virtual treatment plan is then sent back to your us so we can make sure we are both happy with your end result and the way your teeth are going to move throughout your treatment (we can anticipate how your teeth will look at every stage!).

4. Your Invisalign Braces

Once your ClincCheck has been approved by your us, Invisalign will make the custom aligners that will be used to straighten your teeth. The number of aligners that you’ll need will depend on how complex your treatment plan is. Usually, you’ll have one aligner for every two weeks of treatment. It’s important to wear your retainers for between 20 and 22 hours every day.

5. Check-ups

We will give you a few aligners at a time and see you every six to eight weeks to check your progress and hand over the next set of aligners. Usually, this is a quick routine appointment to make sure everything is moving as planned. Occasionally we may need to make small adjustments to your teeth or Invisalign braces. For example, it might be necessary to fit small tooth-coloured buttons to your teeth to help your aligners move them in a particular direction. These are called Invisalign attachments – you can see an example of an attachment in the below photo.

6. Refinements

As you reach the end of your treatment we may need to make some extra refinements to give you the very best results. These would be included in the cost of your treatment and might involve taking another set of impressions, from which Invisalign can make you some extra aligners to refine your results.

7. Retainers

Once your treatment is complete you’ll be given fixed and removable retainers. Before you stop wearing your Invisalign braces we’ll fit a discreet fixed retainer behind your teeth, which will permanently hold them in place. At the same time, we’ll take impressions for a removable retainer, which will arrive back from our lab the following week. Your removable retainer will be very similar to your Invisalign aligners, but you will only need to wear it at night.

8. Follow-up care

Included in cost of your treatment are two years of follow-up care, so for the next 24 months we’ll see you for regular check-ups and you can also get in touch if you have any problems.

New year’s dental resolutions

January 3, 2018 by Fairlight Dental

It’s a brand new year and people up and down the country are busy trying to keep to their new year’s resolutions.

If you’re yet to make your resolutions, or if you’re looking for some new ones, why not think about improving your dental health? Making simple changes to your dental routine in 2018 could set you up for a life time of healthier teeth. We’ve made some suggestions to help get you started!

Visit your dentist at least twice a year

Regular visits to your dentist should be an essential part of your dental health routine, and yet nearly 40% of UK adults admit to not visiting the dentist at least twice a year. Dentists can advise on how to improve your dental health, and recognise potentially dangerous signs early and together with our team of hygienists we can help keep your teeth sparkly clean but more importantly keep your gums healthy, preventing periodontal disease which is the leading cause of tooth loss in the UK.

Get an Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes remove more plaque, simply stated, rechargeable electric toothbrushes (or “power” toothbrushes) provide superior plaque removal to regular manual toothbrushes. And because they provide the brushing action for you, many people find using power toothbrushes easier than using regular manual ones. Additionally, with so many different types and features available, it’s easy to find one that suits your specific oral health needs.

Commit to flossing

Flossing should be an essential part of your dental routine. Yet according to the British Dental Health association, only 21% of adults in the UK floss regularly and one in three have never flossed in their life. Simply brushing your teeth means that 40% of the tooth surface area can be missed in the cleaning process. This increases the risk of cavities, tooth decay and tooth loss.

Quit smoking

Quitting smoking may already be on your list of resolutions, but did you know that it could yield serious health benefits for your mouth as well? Smoking is one of the leading causes of mouth cancer and gum disease in the UK. Studies have shown that smoking is a contributing factor to gum disease in 75% of cases, and that smokers are likely to lose twice as many teeth as non-smokers.

Cut down on sugar

The bacteria that form together to become plaque use sugar as a form of energy making them multiply faster growing in size and thickness. Some of these bacteria cause tooth decay and gum disease, so cutting down on sugar will help improve your dental health, giving you stronger, healthier teeth for longer.

These are just a few ways in which you can improve your oral health and have a healthier, happier mouth for 2018. Why not take advantage of our January offer and start the year as you mean to go on with an initial consultation, extensive dental health check and a hygienist visit, all for £79. Just give us a call on 01291 622450 as wewould love to see you.

Christmas Blog

December 14, 2017 by Fairlight Dental

A Very Merry Christmas to you all!! We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all our patients for their custom and support throughout the year, we appreciate your loyalty and have enjoyed looking after your dental health and creating lots of new smiles as a team.

Jon and I wanted to personally take the time to thank our wonderful team for their continuous hard graft and dedication. Their commitment to the practice is second to none and the practice wouldn’t be what it is without them.

So, 2017 is nearly over! Time flies when you are busy and having fun! And we have been busy!! The main change to the practice is our new exterior look. We love it, thanks to That Media Group for their help with colour choice and the fantastic new signage. We have fitted a handrail at the back to enable access for our less able patients and internally our consultation room has had a makeover. Our new Panoramic x-ray machine is installed and being greatly used.

As for the staff, Liz is now restored to her original hours and it is great to have her back. Our girls have been busy, with Jo finishing up her NVQ in administration, Vic has started a Dental Radiography Qualification and is now our resident photographer too. Margarita has started her Dental Health Education course, so we have all been busy behind the scenes. Our annual practice night away this year took us to the Dentistry Show in Birmingham where we learnt lots about advances in dentistry, got to look at lots of new technology and had a great evening out as a team.

So, on the whole, a really productive year, check out the photographs below, now we are all busy planning our next year’s exploits. Please like us on Facebook to keep up with all our news and once again have a lovely Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Teeth Whitening

December 1, 2017 by Fairlight Dental

December, wow, where did that year go? Christmas will soon be on us with the hustle and bustle of shopping for presents and the crowded shops. I love this time of year, and as the decorations go up in the practice today, we also launch our Christmas Offer.

Being privileged to work in dentistry I am lucky enough to have easy access to all our range of treatments and have tried a lot of our cosmetic procedures. This year I have had my teeth straightened by Jon and am thrilled with the results!

When we were thinking of what we could offer our patients as an accessible Christmas treat, it got me to thinking about what I would like for Christmas, and the answer was obvious. I started whitening my teeth in my twenties, and when I look back at my teenage photos there is a significant difference – if I had those colour teeth now, pushing 40, it would be really ageing- so that was number 1 on my wishlist, TEETH WHITENING. The next thing that I would want is BOTOX. Again, I started having botox after the birth of my second son and I feel it has made a big difference. It really works, and it doesn’t hurt (much) – the most common questions answered! It has given me more confidence, and I now don’t stand in front of the mirror looking for the onset of more fine lines and wrinkles!

So there it is a Christmas treat (my style) – ‘Anti-wrinkle Treatment and Whitening Christmas Package’, see our offers page for details. I’ve had mine and am all ready for the festive season!!

Have a Happy, White and Wrinkle Free Christmas!!

Sian and the team
